VIRTUAL TRAVEL: COSTA PALMAS, MEXICO

TRAVEL

FOUR SEASONS, LOS CABOS, COSTA PALMAS

The low-lying five-star 1,000-acre community adding a new dimension of luxury to the 2-mile stretch of pristine beachfront.

Set against the backdrop of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains (so lush), you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped off the face of the Earth and into some kind of magical mirage. All within four hours of LA.

Journey up the dirt road of the untamed East Cape and discover a sprawling masterpiece bowing to the surrounding showpiece that is Mother Nature. Created by Brooklyn-bass glass architect, retreat into the distance and watch the building almost disappear. An effect designed to tread lightly on the family of palo blancas, sea grapes, torotes, palms and other, fellow native plants surrounding.

Four Seasons’ sensational collection of Private Residences and Villas awaits – your temporary five-star home on the sea of dreams – and one of 141 rooms including 23 suites with a view of Sea Cortéz. Finished with the obligatory trimmings of a classic Four Seasons,’ expect travertine flooring and carved ceramic walls; an elevated canvas for considered art and natural-dye textiles (sourced from Mexico City and Guadalajara) to hero the heritage of the site. The all over vibe is cool and coastal with that Mexican soul. Tick.

If the half-mile of Four Seasons’ exclusive beach isn’t your vibe, then set off in search of one of six pools (two so hidden, you’ll need local intel on their whereabouts).

Get settled and head down to one of five restaurants. You’ll find expert, Greek-inspired seafood and an intimate lunch-only spot with its very own ceviche counter. Next, Limón, the hero harvester of onsite organic orchards and farms, alfresco style.

If the half-mile of Four Seasons’ exclusive beach isn’t your vibe, then set off in search of one of six pools (two so hidden, you’ll need local intel on their whereabouts). Kickback, accept a towel and the offer of a traditional margarita.

Like a side of adventure with your travels? Hike through Sol de Mayo, wind down a natural waterslide, snorkel alongside sea lions (in an UNESCO listed area in Cabo Pulmo).

What annual getaway dreams are made of. But for now, we wait.

HOW TO: TIE-DYE

HOW TO

TIE-DYE WITH MAURIE + EVE DESIGNER, KELLY DAVIES-GREEN

Did you know some of the first styles our Co-Founder Kelly Davies-Green ever created were classic tie-dye Tees and dresses? Some trends just never fade. Re-create these classics at home with your choice of dye and the simple steps below. Kids? Have fun with some mini socks and cute white shirts!

1. Select the styles you want to dye. We recommend the Higher Love Dress, Gauze Throw or Solace Knit in white.

2. The TIE part of tie-dyeing is uniquely important. Simply lay your garment flat, group and tie sections of the garment with a rubber band. You can either freestyle (which is what we’ve done) or experiment with different techniques, as shared by High Snobiety: https://www.highsnobiety.com/p/how-to-tie-dye-t-shirts/

3. Rubber gloves! Protect hands from staining and keep insulated while working with hot water. Fill a bucket or stainless steel sink with enough water for the fabric to move freely. Use hot water. If tap water is not hot enough, boil the kettle a few times and add.

4. Enhance the colour. Add one cup of salt when dyeing fabrics containing cotton, rayon, ramie or linen.

5. Pour powder dye or (well-shaken) liquid dye into the tub and mix with a stainless steel spoon or tongs. For those seeking a natural dye alternative, we recommend these steps by Martha Stewart: https://www.marthastewart.com/1518254/natural-dyes-from-vegetables-and-plants

6. Test colour. Dip a paper towel into the dye bath. If colour is too light, add more dye. If colour is too dark, add more water.

7. Add your dry garment to the dye bath.

8. Stir slowly. The first 10 minutes are the most critical. If you want an even colour then continue to stir for no splotches. We like the mottled look, so Kelly stirred once before leaving for a few hours (or overnight).

9. When desired colour is achieved, remove garment from the dye bath. Head to the garden and using a hose, squeeze out excess dye – rinsing until the water begins to run clear.

10. Express rinse cycle in the washing machine.

11. Using small scissors carefully cut the rubber bands off.

12. Hang to dry in direct sunlight.

INTERVIEW: SHARONA HARRIS, F+H JEWELLERY

INTERVIEW

SHARONA HARRIS, F+H JEWELLERY

Forever on the hunt for local Australian creatives to curate and collaborate, MAURIE + EVE is now ranging a hand selection of F+H Jewellery. We chat with F+H Founder and Designer Sharona Harris on music influence and dinner with Grace Jones.

M+E: You define the F+H aesthetic as ‘tough luxe’ – how does this translate through design, the combination of stones and metal, and so on?

SH: The tough-luxe aesthetic that I create is translated through our use of strong minimal design shapes, complimented with gemstones set in claw and prong to deliver edge to each design. I am inspired by minimal concrete architecture and furniture, so these clean and impactful shapes, create the base, and the luxe element is added with beautiful gemstones for a glamorous finish.

M+E: We have also read that your ‘love of music culture from the 70s, 80s and 90s’ infiltrates F+H designs. Who are some of your favourite artists/albums from each era and how do they resonate in your pieces – where can we find their influence?

SH: At the moment I am having a huge 80s moment, I love the excess of this era, and have had a lot of fun with this party aesthetic in my latest collection featuring over-sized cut gemstones and large chains. From my latest collection the Annie earrings and necklace were named after Annie Lenox from the Eurythmics, she is one of my style icons with her short pixie crop and androgynous styling, so cool. Their track ‘Would I Lie to You’ is a favourite for me.

In my teenage years I listened to a lot of late 70s punk music, Iggy Pop and Black Flag and the Ramones, and this was the inspiration behind my previous collection featuring custom-designed, hammered metal link earrings and chains.

When I think of the 90s I can’t go past Madonna and the amazing ‘VOGUE’ film clip, so iconic, and I just had to name an earring after her as a tribute to this.

"The F+H girl is confident and isn’t afraid to make a statement. She values her own uniqueness, and knows that what makes us different is what we need to be proud of. Own it."

M+E: Why are MAURIE + EVE and F+H a match made in heaven?

SH: MAURIE + EVE is an iconic Australian brand, and it is so wonderful to be working together with a team of strong women that I admire so much!

M+E: If you could have dinner with anyone who would it be and what F+H piece would you gift them?

SH: Grace Jones, she is my absolute style queen, but beyond that she was a powerful figure for women at a time when we didn’t have many strong role models. Her originality and creativity is so inspiring. I’d love to see Grace wearing the Drama drop earrings, such as perfect pairing!

M+E: The first F+H piece you ever made?

SH: The Debbie femme earrings inspired by Debbie Harry and Studio 54. I just re-released these for International Women’s Day, with proceeds going to the SHIFT project in Byron Bay (to help support homeless women in my community).

M+E: The F+H pieces currently on high rotation for you?

SH: I literally wear the Double Dylan link earrings every day!
