WHY GUA SHA?

Synonymous with a flawless complexion and that It Girl glow, no one knows how to prep and prime skin quite like Byron based hair and makeup artist, Ash Penfold. A long term advocate of the now popular gua sha, Ash has released her very own tool - The Base Camp. Cut from Tiger’s Eye  and with a unique, contour-loving shape, it’s our top pick for this ancient Chinese ritual.

We chat with Ash on the short and long term benefits of gua sha, plus top serums to integrate with your practice at home.

M+E: The Base Camp tool is gorgeous. Talk to us about your choice to use Tiger’s Eye gemstone of all stones available?

AP: Thank you so much! I wanted a stone that I’ve always been drawn to (as I’ve been using gua sha for years). I hadn’t seen any in Tiger’s Eye, and the more research I did, the more I fell in love with it.

M+E: And the shape … there are many gua sha shapes on the market, why have you elected the shape that you have?

AP: I played around with many shapes. I particularly liked this shape as it has the forked edge which hugs the contours of the face easily. Also, it felt uncomplicated and easy to use.

M+E: How and when did you first discover the tool, and have you been using it daily ever since?

AP: I’ve been using gua sha on myself and models for years. I first discovered the ritual when I was really into Korean beauty and skincare … they use a myriad of face tools for anti-aging and many other benefits.

“Short term I see a dramatic difference in puffiness and clarity. Long term a more sculptured jaw and cheekbone. I particularly like to work on the brow area.”

M+E: What differences have you noticed in your skin/facial features?

AP: Short term I see a dramatic difference in puffiness and clarity. Long term a more sculptured jaw and cheekbone. I particularly like to work on the brow area.

M+E: What is your favourite serum/product to use alongside Base Camp?

AP: I switch it up a lot, but a few of my favourites are the Go-To Hero Face Oil. RMS Beauty Oil and the Glow Recipe Watermelon Dew Drops.

M+E: Do you use Base Camp on all talent when onset – are the effects instantly noticeable?

AP: I always prep the skin with gua sha –it immediately de-puffs the face (which is perfect if the model has just flown in). It also gets the blood flowing which gives me a really fresh base to then go in with makeup.

M+E: Any plans to bring out another/gemstone variety, or any further products to the Base Camp family?

AP: We have many exciting things in the works. Stay tuned!

M+E: Greatest beauty secret shared with you?

AP: Start with the skin. Spend time on this step; makeup will sit better on the skin and you’ll inevitably need less.
