COLLAB

ARTIST TY WILLIAMS

We chat all things blue with the creator of our just-released ‘Blue Waves’ print, Ty Williams.

M+E: Describe your brief for this project?

TW: Kelly wanted a pattern that was light and airy, something inspired by far flung travels, and that could be readily wearable and enticing. Think a little vintage “Euro” adventure vibe.

M+E: Your print has a personality, what are its three, standout traits?

TW: The pattern is inspired by some of my personal experiences in the Mediterranean. Athenian symbols and time spent on the Cyclades’ electric blue water. I like for things to be simplistic but with enough personality that it’s fun and has a little wit to it.

M+E: What does the colour blue represent for you?

TW: The colour blue represents beginnings, clear sky days, cold plunges, long ocean soaks and endless memories growing up surfing and snorkelling. The colour blue is a battery source for me in a way because it’s the closest I can come to wearing the ocean, or the sky.

“When I get to pick colours, I always imagine them on a person or on a wall. It’s really impulsive. So too was picking this one.”

M+E: How would you describe this shade of blue, and why was it a perfect choice for the prints/context at hand?

TW: When I get to pick colours, I always imagine them on a person or on a wall. It’s really impulsive. So too was picking this one. I tried my best to see it flowing on a body walking to the sea or contrasted with a glass of wine laughing with loved ones at dinner.

M+E: If this collaboration were an album or a song, what would it be?

TW: Laney Tripp “Blastoid.”  This song plays on repeat in the studio, and she is a dear friend.

M+E: One of your favourite blue things in the world is …

TW: Besides the obvious (the ocean and waves), I would say my favourite blue thing is my perfectly faded sun drenched/ salt-stained navy-blue hat from Capri – it’s a comfort blanket for me…

M+E: If you were a shade of blue, what would it be?

TW: A dusty, overly faded (but just perfect) indigo.

M+E: Current playlist on repeat?

TW: Something with Benny Yurco, Michael Nau, Arthur Russell, Amen Dunes and lots of early roots reggae.
